Mini artist palettes with animated, color-shifting “paint wells.” Here is how to set them up and make the most of the modes.
Quick start
- Unlock. During shipping the button may be set to a “blank canvas” mode so the earrings can’t switch on by accident. Plug them into any USB-C charger and they unlock.
- Charge them with a USB-C cable.
- Press the small button on the back to wake them up. Each further press moves to the next mode.
If a press does nothing, the earrings are either in shipping mode or out of power: plugging them in fixes both.
Modes and brightness
There are 7 modes and 5 brightness settings. The number of lit “paint wells” shows which power mode you are in.
- Change the mode: short press.
- Change the brightness: hold the button for 2 seconds.
- Rest mode (sleep): hold the button for 3 seconds to save power until next time.
About the power source
Your piece runs on a hybrid supercapacitor (a lithium-ion capacitor, or LIC) instead of a coin cell battery. It charges quickly, lasts for years, and is safer and more rugged than a rechargeable battery: it doesn’t catch fire or explode. If it is ever stressed too much, it simply vents a harmless puff of air through the top.
- A built-in backup charging system keeps current and voltage within the safe limits of the capacitor.
- Unlike regular supercapacitors, an LIC must stay above 2.5 V. Charge it fully before you store it for a long time.
- Keep it away from liquids and metal (conductive) objects. A fast discharge shortens its life.
- When you are done with it, recycle it with your normal household electronics. You do not need to take the capacitor out.
